Our Profile

Brief history

Davis Cash & Co. Ltd can trace it’s beginnings back to 1862 when, in Clerkenwell, the the founder was producing walking stick mounts in fine metals. The company developed into light fittings through the conversion of gas fittings to electric light fittings through to the actual manufacture of light fittings during the twentieth century. The firm was incorporated as a limited company in 1925 under the current name.
Since the second world war the company has specialised in manufacturing special and custom made fluorescent and discharge light fittings, generally from sheet metal, on a sub contract basis for the leading lighting companies of the day. The light fittings are generally for the commercial and leisure market such as offices, department stores, hospitals, libraries, sports facilities, shopping malls, hotels and other similar public buildings. We have remained as a major supplier to Thorn Lighting since the 1950’s and to Philips Lighting and Concord Lighting since the 1960’s.
Davis Cash is proud to have been associated with these large and successful lighting companies for a such long period of time and also to be associated with newer lighting companies that have been formed during the same period. We pride ourselves in developing long term relationships with our customers who, we like to think, use our company as an extension of their own facilities.

Resources

Davis Cash & Co Ltd. is situated in the Ponders End area of Enfield in north London in a factory that was built in 1959 and has had two extensions built since that date. The total factory area now covers an area of 1650 square metres. The factory is based in three linked areas with the metal store and the cutting machines in one area, the main sheet metal fabrication in the second and the assembly in the third.
The management has pursued a policy of re-equipping the machinery to incorporate the modern computer controlled systems. The company has one guillotine, two LVD/Shape piercing machines (the last one was purchased at the end of 1999), two 3m press brakes, a 2m press brake, a 1.2m press brake, a 3m unit tool punch press, power presses, spot welders, MIG welding units and a TIG welding unit. The assembly area has a wire-cutting and preparation machine and two Clare electrical test stations. The finished goods are delivered on the company’s vans.

Personnel

Davis Cash currently has a production staff of 20 with a management team of four.
A large majority of the current production staff joined at a young age as unskilled personnel and has been trained by the company to become skilled workers on sheet metal production and on electrical wiring assembly.

Customers

The Company specialises in manufacturing light fittings to special order only and produces both direct to the end user but mainly produces fittings for the other light fitting suppliers on a sub-contract basis. The customer base includes some of the largest lighting companies such as Philips Lighting, Thorn Lighting and Concord Lighting as well as many smaller lighting companies.

Suppliers

Davis Cash has developed a comprehensive list of suppliers, many of whom have supplied the company for many years. Davis Cash maintains a graded list of suppliers and ensures that there is dual sourcing of the most important services and components.

Processes

A large majority of the production is to special order only and consequently there is not always time to produce samples or prototypes. Davis Cash is used to working to new designs and ensuring that the production is correct first time. Davis Cash can work from the customers own production drawings, or as is increasingly the case, from basic outline sketches from the customer and producing its own production drawings.
Davis Cash can therefore offer the customer the complete package from drawing, through production, finishing, assembly and despatch, all controlled by ISO9002 procedures.

Quality Assurance

The Company has been successful in being continuously assessed to ISO9002 (BS5750) standards since 1994. As part of the ISO9000 requirements Davis Cash have a full written set of operating procedures which have been fully discussed with all members of staff.
The management requires a culture of quality engineered products and production is checked throughout all the processes. The object of the company is to operate an effective system to ensure that the requirements of the customers are always met. All goods are fully assessed and tested before final despatch to the customer.
The fact that Davis Cash has continued to work for some of the largest lighting companies in Europe for such long periods of time must bear testament to the care and quality that the staff at Davis Cash put into the units that they produce
